A Called Apostle (Romans 3)


What did it mean to be an apostle? How could Paul, who came after Jesus' earthly ministry, claim to be an apostle? Are there apostles today?

Just Who is a Jew?

I ran across an interesting opinion piece in Israel's oldest newspaper, haaretz.  It was entitled, "Defining 'who is a Jew’" and written by A.B. Yehoshua.  Mr. Joshua goes into the sticky and nuanced as defining Jewishness for the purposes of understanding who has the Israeli Law of Return.  Mr. Yehoshua ably demonstrates the quandaries that civil government can face in determining who may migrate to Israel with full citizenship rights.

Judaism's definition is beyond my pay grade; that is for them to hash out.  For me as a Christian the answer is theological from my christological viewpoint.  What makes it difficult is that "Jew" is used in different senses in the New Testament.

The Apostle Paul readily would use the term "Jew" those who were born into The Covenant People:
I am speaking the truth in Christ--I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit--that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. (Romans 9:1-5 ESV)
Yet he also used "Jew" to describe an observant Jew:
For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God. (Romans 2:28-29 ESV)
But, in the end, it little mattered to Paul because he believed old distinctions were done away with in Christ:
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:12-13 ESV)
and now the circumcised Jew and the uncircumcised Gentile became one new person, a spiritual Jew, so to speak, and children of Abraham by being justified by faith as Abraham did: 
What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness." Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works: "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin." Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised. For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. (Romans 4:1-13 ESV) 
But now in Christ Jesus you [Gentiles] who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:13-22 ESV) 
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. (Galatians 3:28-29 ESV)

A Slave of Christ Jesus (Romans 2)


The word "slave" is politically incorrect today yet Paul considered it a great honor to be Christ's slave.  What does it mean to be a slave of Jesus?

It's easy to assume that Christ was an itinerant rabbi with just a dozen apostles. The reality is more complex; King Jesus traveled with a Messianic community composed of men and women. What were the demands he imposed on those who would be his followers?

It's easy to think of a gospel account as a biography where each writer stuffed as much material in as he could.  This is incorrect; Matthew, Mark, Luke and John carefully selected their material and bypassed other information to build their case for Christ.  In this sermon we see what Matthew, under God's sovereign guidance, chose not to include in between two verses.

The Mystery of the Heavenly Bracelet

I heard a wonderful story this morning in my church office at First Church of an event that happened recently. Our main maintenance guy on staff, Mack, attends Fairview Christian Community Church.  Mack had a glorious incident to share with me.  Mack's pastor, Larry Dyer, has Parkinson's Disease.  (He soon will receive deep brain stimulation at a Nashville hospital to treat his tremor.)

About three weeks ago Larry's congregation came up to their pastor to give him cards and encouragement.  After that Sunday morning worship service Larry noticed something amazing.  On his wrist was a bracelet that he had never seen before.  He didn't recall anyone putting it on his wrist that morning, either.  It said something similar to, "I can do all things through Jesus Christ."  

Larry noticed that afternoon that the encouraging bracelet was gone!  He and his wife looked for it and they found it, of all special places, underneath his Bible.  Larry put it back on and hasn't taken it off!

Isn't that a glorious story?  Nobody claims to know from where this mysterious bracelet came.  He doesn't know how it got on his wrist, back off his wrist and underneath his Bible.

What a merciful God we serve!
