Peter Furler: "I'm Alive" Video

Peter Furler was the frontman for the popular Christian group, Newsboys.  He now has struck out on his own.  From the sound of this song he hasn't lost a step!  I respect him; his lyrics are deep, profound and worshipful.  He's not fluff.  He's no flash-in-the-pan.  He's legit.

Preachers, Heed This Message!

I found this picture on Facebook today:

For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:2-5 ESV)

Script Your Life

Nevertheless, with most of [the Israelites in the desert] God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play." We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. (1 Corinthians 10:5-12 ESV)

I'm Preaching at Dunbar First Church of God

I will fill the pulpit of the Dunbar First Church of God this Sunday morning, June 10.  I'm looking forward to it; my father retired from full-time ministry at the church last year and I know the people well.

Sunday morning worship begins at 10:30 A.M.

First Church of God
1234 Payne Avenue
Dunbar, WV  25064

I am a West Virginian...and a Kentuckian and an Oklahoman...and More

Alfred Lord Tennyson, in Ulysses, said, "I am a part of all that I have met" and in that he was right.  Today I paraphrase it as, "I am a part of everywhere I have lived."  I was born free because I was born a Mountaineer.  (Montani Semper Liberi—"Mountaineers Are Always Free"—is the motto of West Virginia.)  Appalachia runs through my veins.

When I was in sixth grade my father, a pastor, moved our family to Kentucky to serve another congregation.  I learned that grass can be blue.  I graduated from Boyd County High School in 1989.  My influential teen years were spent in Kentucky.  Unbridled Spirit runs through my veins.

I felt God call me to Mid-America Bible College (now Mid-America Christian University) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to study for the ministry.  Four years and one degree later I left Oklahoma, a land of great people.  Great is the God of the Oklahomans!  Sooner runs through my veins.

These three great areas—two states and one commonwealth—helped shape me into the person that I am.  I'm proud of them all.  But one loyalty is greater.

I am a citizen of heaven.
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. (Hebrews 12:22-24 ESV)
Glory runs through my veins.

Thought for the Day

Would heaven be heaven if everybody got there?

Many people believe the only requirement to enter heaven is death.

a person dies = a person goes to heaven

Does this square with the Bible?
Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. (Revelation 22:14-15 ESV)

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 ESV)

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21 ESV)
How does one get to heaven?
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. (John 3:36 ESV)
Is Jesus the only way?
And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12 ESV)

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 ESV)

This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:11-12 ESV)
